"The Wild World of Animal Prostheses"
The start of the article was crafted in a way that used large quantities of Pathos. I couldn't help but feel bad for the animals who got beaten up over something they didn't intend. As I read the first paragraph my mind began to fill with questions that I didn't have the answers to. My heart filled with sadness and despair. Who can stand the sight of a suffering animal? I believe the phrase, "hook, line, and sinker" would describe my encounter with the first paragraph. At that point I had to read to see if there was a way to help these animals and sure enough there is. I was stunned by the prehistoric look of the prostheses and how largely unchanged the socket attachments are. I was shocked at how little progress there has been with prosthetics even though there are an estimated 1.9 million amputees in the United States. Random facts like this thrown in by the author are not only a good use of ethos but also created an illusion that a large portion of Americans are being mistreated. This can charge an audience to shed a light on how underdeveloped prosthetics are and push for advancements in the field. I think that the author used some pathos in this article but it was very subtle and blended well with logos. If the author used more pathos I still would have been interested but I would have felt that the article was more of a prosthetics campaign than a informational article. The recent advancements and breakthroughs in prostheses is something that the public doesn't really know about. Maybe this is because the progress has been so stagnate over the years. Osseointegration has the potential to let animal and human amputees live long and productive lives. My opinion on this is that there is still much left to be discovered. There must be more testing and successful attempts at osseointegration for this to be the biggest breakthrough in prostheses history. At the start of the article my feelings were hurt but the end of the article gave me hope. We may finally be able to help not just animals but also humans. Our troops would no longer have to face incredible hardships and finally have a better quality of life. I believe that we are just at the doorstep with osseointergration and I cannot wait to open the door.
