In my opinion, this reading written by E.B White reflects the positive and caring relationship humans have with their animals. How the author presents this is that in the reading we observe that the main character, which is a farmer, finds out that his pig is ill from an unknown disease and it refuses to eats and vomits. But before in the beginning we at first get the impression that the farmer raises his pigs to be slaughtered and only cares for it because the pig is what helps him survive as he discusses the routine as which they are bought, fed, and then slaughtered. But as you continue to read it seems he has a lot of compassion and becomes attached to the pig as he goes out of his way on a daily basis to take care of it and make sure it gets back to a healthy state such as checking on it, and calling people to help treat and diagnose it.
But in the end, 24 hours after the big is seen by professional, the farmer find the pig dead. We then see the Farmer become sad and depressed as he feels he has failed to raise his pig. He also talks about how he did not see or talk to others for a period amount of time which makes me think that the animals a farmer raises helps a farmer's well being whether its financially, physically, or emotionally in this case because we see as the pig got worse, the more depressed the farmer had gotten. this is how the reading shows the caring relationship between humans and their animals.
