"Creature Comforts"

While reading “Creature Comforts” written by Rebecca Skloot, all the real life stories she wrote about made me really happy. Hearing about people with different disabilities, from physical to mental and emotional, getting the help they need from these animals makes me relieved for these people. I never would have thought that people would be against animals that are helping the lives of other people. I can kind of understand that they think some of the animals, like the monkeys, could be dangerous because they are wild animals, but in cases like Jim Eggers without Sadie he himself can cause danger to people around him. When talking about whether or not to ban certain animals from being service animals, they can’t look at each species as a whole because each individual animal is so different according to how it was raised. If someone just pulled a capuchin monkey out of the wild to use as a service animal, yeah I would be a little concerned, but the capuchin monkeys are sent to a school to make sure they are fit for what they need to do. I think that they need to look at each case individually and see if that animal is okay to be around other people and animals. I think that in order to become a service animal, the animal and their owner should go through testing and get certified. If this animal is really helping out their owner in a way that betters their life, they should be called a service animal no matter what species it is. If each animal and their owner have to go through testing, it would leave less room for people to pretend that their pet is a service animal just so they can bring their pets along where they go. The fact that people even do that in the first place really grinds my gears. Some people really have disabilities that they can’t help or control unless they have their service animals. These people that are pretending to have problems probably don’t even think about what the people with disabilities feel like. I’m sure they love their service animals, but all in all they probably wish they didn’t need to use them as a service animal. And the business owners that won’t let people with service animals in are making the people with disabilities lives harder. Jim Eggers couldn’t even go to the dentist because they would not let Sadie in. I believe that if an animal is really helping their owner they should be allowed wherever their owner needs to go.
