"Opinion: SeaWorld vs. the Whale That Killed Its Trainer"
The article "SeaWorld vs. the Whale That Killed Its Trainer" by Ken Brower was about killer whales and the effects that captivity have on them. The film Blackfish and this article go hand in hand. Brower's writing is very powerful and moving because of his persistent reasoning and facts to back his opinion. Brower clearly does not buy into any of SeaWorld's statements that are released to the public that state that there is nothing wrong with killer whales in captivity. Long before reading this article I had watched the documentary Blackfish. Blackfish was a very moving documentary, and it completely changed the way that I view SeaWorld. I felt that Brower's rhetoric only made my new opinion of SeaWorld stronger because of his passionate writing style. I do not believe that SeaWorld is intentionally harming these animals, but I do believe that these animals are not meant to be in captivity and are better off in the wild than used for our entertainment. I think the fact that a killer whale has never harmed a human in nature, but has been involved in a number of deaths while in captivity is something that should really capture people's attention that these animals in captivity are living a stressful, unhappy life. However, most of cases made cannot be proved and we do not know the feelings of the animal, which is the reason that there is not much action to prevent this. I also think that SeaWorld is a special place and would be a interesting to visit, but I feel that these animals would be living much happier lives if they lived in the wild and not in captivity.
