Pets as Children; "'For the Dogs' Has a Whole New Meaning"

My family has three dogs and I have a cat, so this article really hit home for me. As I was reading this article I was wondering, what makes people feel so inclined to buy such expensive things for their pets? The companies that sell the more expensive pet products have a strong hold over American pet owners, why is that? I examined the rhetoric that was present in the article, “‘For the Dogs’ Has a Whole New Meaning”. What I found is that the most effective arguments for all natural dog food, work out equipment for pets, etc. is based upon comparing pets to humans. I think this is because people tend to treat their pets like their children, especially if they only have pets. They want to make sure that their pets are as healthy as they can be and make sure that they are getting the best of the best, just as a new parent might. If someone told me that my cat was not getting what she needed and that there was a better food out there that could keep her healthier, I would want to check it out. If I was convinced that a certain food or treat would keep her alive longer, I would pay as much as I needed to to keep her healthy. Comparing pets to humans is successful rhetoric because people tend to treat their pets like a part of the family, like a human themselves. That makes me wonder, how much do pets really feel? Do they even realize how much we do for our pets, or is it something we just do for ourselves?
